We are a GOOD School in each and every aspect - Ofsted 2016

British Values

The DfE have recently emphasised the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

Through the Prevent Strategy (2011), the Government have clearly identified the definition of British Values and these have been reiterated by the Prime Minister this year. At Cliffe VC Primary School we ensure these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

At Cliffe VC Primary School we are committed to making the children a big part of the decision making process within the school. Therefore, we provide opportunities for children to have their voices heard. This happens through our school council,P.A.L.S. ( Play and Lunch time Squad) Pupil questionnaires, class votes, children are also consulted through assemblies, circle time and general staff/pupil discussions. We ensure that children are taught the skills to voice their opinion in a constructive and respectful manner At Cliffe VC school we act out the principles of restorative practise when dealing with behaviour issues where all children are equally heard in all behaviour incidents.

The Rule of Law:

At Cliffe VC Primary School we aim to reinforce the importance of laws in our cross curricular curriculum. Children are taught about the laws that govern the country, the school and the class. These laws are consistently reinforced throughout the school day. Children are fully aware of the behaviour policy and the sanctions that consist in result of choosing not to follow the rules.

Individual Liberty:

Cliffe VC Primary School provides a safe, supportive and stimulating learning environment that provides, promotes and encourages all children to actively make choices. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and teach how to exercise these through our curriculum and PSHCEE lessons. The amount of extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, give children the freedom to make choices.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs:

Through our ethos, PSHCE lessons and the hidden curriculum our school values aims to teach the importance of respect. This is reiterated through our classroom and learning behaviours, as well as our behaviour policy. We have a robust RE curriculum which teaches children to understand and appreciate our culturally diverse society. Assemblies and class discussions involving prejudices and prejudice-based bullying have been followed and supported by learning in RE and PSHCE. We have a policy and procedures to record and report race, hate and bullying incidents should they occur. School Visits to different places of worship are actively encouraged and visitors from of different faiths or religions are welcomed within the school to enhance learning within classes and the school. We also have links with a school in Zambia and recently have linked with one in Bangkok,Thailand

At Cliffe VC Primary the children’s Spiritual, Moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the forefront our curriculum and is a strength of our school ethos. We aim to give children Firm Foundations for life on which to build the life skills that enable them to develop into well rounded young adults that are equipped with the confidence and resilience to face the next steps in their future.
